About Valpo Excavation and Septic, LLC

Valpo Excavation is a locally-owned and operated company that was founded by Russ Buechs, a man chasing the American Dream. Russ is a family-oriented businessman who strives to provide a great life for his family. That’s why he built this family-owned, faith-based company from the ground up. He created this company with honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity in mind. His goal is to bring solid foundations to every home and business throughout Northwest Indiana. From the initial site preparation to the laying of foundation and utilities, Valpo Excavation can handle it all with expertise and reliability.

Russell is the owner of Valpo Excavation and Septic, LLC, and his story is not one built overnight. It comes from years of hands-on work, real jobsite experience, and a commitment to doing things the right way, even when it takes more time or effort.

He built this company with a clear purpose in mind:

to create something that reflects honesty, reliability, and pride in workmanship.

Russell is a family-oriented, faith-driven business owner who understands what it means to work hard for what you have. Like many homeowners and contractors he serves, he is chasing the American Dream, and he treats every project as if it were his own property on the line.

Experience That Goes Beyond the Surface

With over 15 years in heavy construction, Russell brings a level of experience that shows up in every phase of a project.

He has worked across nearly every stage of building, including:

Foundation work

Site preparation

Utility trenching

Concrete work

Drainage solutions

Septic system installation and replacement

This kind of well-rounded background matters. It means he does not just see one piece of the job. He understands how everything connects.

That is especially important when dealing with septic systems, grading, and site prep, where one small mistake can create long-term problems.

Russell has also gained hands-on experience internationally through mission work in Guatemala, where he learned and applied concrete techniques in real-world conditions. That experience shaped his attention to detail and problem-solving mindset.

Built on Values That Still Matter

Valpo Excavation and Septic, LLC was not created to be the biggest company in Northwest Indiana.

It was built to be the most dependable.

From day one, Russell focused on three core values:

Honesty

Trustworthiness

Integrity

These are not just words on a page. They show up in how projects are quoted, how communication is handled, and how problems are solved when they come up.

Because they always do.

Excavation and septic work is rarely perfect from start to finish. There are unknowns underground, weather challenges, and unexpected issues that can throw off a plan.

What matters is how those situations are handled.

Russell has built a reputation for staying calm, communicating clearly, and finding solutions that keep projects moving forward without cutting corners.

Foundation Excavation 101: Preparing for Construction in Northwest Indiana

Foundation Excavation 101: Preparing for Construction in Northwest Indiana

August 13, 2026

The strength of any home, garage, or commercial building relies entirely on the ground beneath it. Before concrete can be poured or blocks can be laid, the site must be prepared through foundation excavation. This process is far more complex than simply digging a large hole. It requires precision, an understanding of soil mechanics, and careful planning for water management.

Foundation Excavation 101

For property owners in Northwest Indiana, foundation excavation is a critical step in the construction journey. The region's mix of heavy clay soils and seasonal moisture means that site preparation must be handled correctly to prevent future settling or water intrusion. Valpo Excavation and Septic LLC provides comprehensive site preparation and excavation services to ensure every build starts on solid ground.

The Steps of Foundation Excavation

Foundation excavation transforms a raw piece of land into a precise footprint ready for construction. The process generally follows several key steps to ensure accuracy and safety.

  1. Site Layout and Staking: Before any digging begins, the exact dimensions of the foundation are marked using stakes and string lines based on the architectural plans. This ensures the structure will be built in the correct location and meet property setback requirements.
  2. Topsoil Removal: The nutrient rich topsoil is stripped away from the building area. Because topsoil is soft and contains organic matter, it cannot support the weight of a building. This soil is often stockpiled on the property to be used later for final grading and landscaping.
  3. Excavating to Depth: Using heavy equipment, the contractor digs down to the required depth. This depth depends on the type of foundation being built, whether it is a full basement, a crawlspace, or a concrete slab. The excavation must reach stable, load bearing soil.
  4. Benching and Sloping: For deep excavations like basements, the sides of the hole cannot simply be dug straight down. To prevent the soil walls from collapsing and endangering workers, the edges are either sloped backward or cut into step like benches.
  5. Leveling the Base: The bottom of the excavation must be perfectly level so the concrete footings will cure evenly and support the structure properly.

Managing Water from Day One

A critical part of foundation excavation is planning for water management. Once the hole is dug, it can easily act like a pond if it rains. Contractors must ensure the site drains properly during construction.

Furthermore, the excavation process must leave enough room around the outside of the future foundation walls to install waterproofing materials and drainage systems, such as exterior French drains. Once the foundation is built and sealed, the contractor returns to backfill the space with soil, carefully compacting it and grading the surface so that rainwater flows safely away from the new building.

Starting a construction project with professional foundation excavation ensures that the structure will remain stable, dry, and secure for decades.
